What is a diet?

A diet is everything you consume regularly – from cereal, eggs, and milk to pizza or candies. But simply eating food doesn't make a diet healthy. The goal of healthy eating is to maintain a balance of nutrients essential for your body. A healthy diet consists of a balance of:

Healthy food supplies your daily macronutrient and micronutrient needs. The key is that the healthiest food for one person may not be ideal for another, depending on factors like metabolism, allergies, and personal health needs.

The Longevity Diet

One of the most studied diets for promoting longevity, the Mediterranean diet focuses on whole, plant-based foods, healthy fats, and lean proteins. It’s known for its heart-healthy benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

Traditional mediterranean diets focuses on regional foods from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Pesco-mediterranean diets are a combination of the Mediterranean and pescatarian diets, where seafood is the primary source of protein.

Low-carb mediterranean diet is similar to the traditional Mediterranean diet, but adjust to a lower carbohydrate intake. This is often done by reducing grains and starchy vegetables in favor of leafy greens and lean proteins.

But the best diet for you isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a balance of the right nutrients tailored to your unique body, lifestyle, and personal needs. Whether you follow a balanced, carnivore, vegetarian, or any other diet, the key is to ensure it helps you thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally for the long haul.

For You

All humans share similar dietary needs - but our upbringing may shift what makes some food healthy, and some foods not. In general, a healthy diet can help:

  • reduce inflammation
  • improve digestion
  • help your body recover from stress

A bad diet is easy to tell because it doesn’t make you feel good. But a good diet can be hard to tell because it may not feel like anything at all.

Healthy diets often don't taste the best, and take a while before you physically and mentally feel better. Because of this, most people fail to take the time and energy required to find out what foods work best and what foods don't. So they struggle to know what makes them feel good, and what makes them feel bad.

In the next section we will dive into the most common types of diet. We hope this serves as a resource for you when things happen in life that force you to readjust your diet. It's a natural and normal part of the process. Enjoy the journey.

A balanced diet emphasizes all food groups in the right proportions. It includes carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and all essential vitamins and minerals. This type of diet is designed to maintain a balanced intake of all nutrients to support long-term health.

Mediterranean diets focuses on plant-based foods, whole grains, healthy fats (like olive oil), and lean proteins (such as fish). It allows moderate consumption of dairy, poultry, and wine, and limits red meat and processed foods. Flexitarian diets are primarily plant-based but allows occasional consumption of meat and animal products in small amounts.

The carnivore diet consists primarily of animal products, including meat, fish, and animal-derived fats, with no plant-based foods. It is high in protein and fat but lacks carbohydrates and fiber.

Strict carnivore diets emphasize the consumption of only meat, organs, and animal fats; no plant foods, dairy, or eggs. Animal-based diets includes some plant foods like honey, fruit, and limited dairy but focuses heavily on animal products.

Based on the presumed diet of our ancestors, the paleo diet includes whole foods like lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, while excluding processed foods, grains, and dairy. The goal is to eat in a way that mimics ancient hunter-gatherer nutrition.

Strict paleo diets include only meat, grains, legumes, dairy, and some minimally processed foods. Primal diets are a less strict version of paleo which allows for some dairy (like raw or fermented) but focuses more on sustainable eating habits.

A vegetarian diet excludes meat, poultry, and fish but includes plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Lacto-vegetarian includes dairy products but excludes eggs, meat, and fish. Ovo-vegetarian includes eggs but excludes dairy, meat, and fish. Lacto-ovo vegetarian includes both dairy and eggs but excludes meat and fish.

Other forms of vegetarianism are pescatarian, which includes fish and seafood but excludes other types of meat, and veganism, the most trendy form of vegetarianism. Vegans exclude all animal products, including dairy, eggs, and honey.

🌾
Gluten-Free Diet

1️⃣
Strict Gluten-Free

NO GLUTEN OR PROCESSED FOODS.

2️⃣
Low-Gluten Diet

SMALL AMOUNT OF NATURAL GLUTEN.

3️⃣
Paleo-Gluten-Free

WHOLE FOODS. NO GRAINS.

The gluten-free diet excludes all foods containing gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and their derivatives. This diet is essential for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance but has also gained popularity for its potential benefits related to digestion and reducing inflammation.

Strict gluten-free diets completely excludes gluten and all processed foods that may contain even trace amounts of gluten.

Low-gluten diets are best for people who do not have celiac disease but prefer to limit gluten intake, this variation allows for small amounts of gluten, often focusing on naturally gluten-free foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Paleo-gluten-free is a combination of the gluten-free and paleo diets, focusing on whole foods and avoiding grains entirely.
